The research project aims to negotiate between a pair of opportunities- from a cellular pattern determined from an idealized grid of an existing staircase to the cellular orientation of the mechanical ductwork in the ceiling of the adjacent corridor. The proposed shelving system provides design flexibility to transition from a vertical rectangular grid to an adjacent and perpendicular ceiling orientation in a hexagonal form for the mechanical duct. The proposed shelving system is comprised of two components where the wood describes the rectangular geometry while the steel describes the hexagonal geometry.
